Quick answer

Shingle roof repair in Los Angeles fixes three common failures: missing or curling shingles, granule loss that leaves bald spots, and nail pops or lifted seams. We replace damaged shingles with a matched color and profile, reseal lifted tabs and reset loose nails, then tell you how much life the roof has left.

Repair or replace

A few bad shingles don't mean a new roof

Asphalt shingles fail in patches before they fail everywhere. Wind rips tabs whose seal never bonded, sun cooks the south and west slopes first, and nails pushed up by a moving deck lift the shingle above them. Caught early, each of those is a small repair.

The deciding question is how much of the roof is affected. If the damage is local and the shingles still bend without cracking, repair makes sense. If they are brittle everywhere or the roof is on its second layer, patches won't last, and a new shingle roof is the better spend.

What to look for

Signs your shingle roof needs repair

Shingles in the yard

Pieces on the ground after wind mean gaps up top.

Curled or cupped edges

Edges lifting off the roof let wind and water under.

Bald patches

Granule loss exposes the asphalt to sun.

Grit in the gutters

Heavy granule wash-off signals aging shingles.

Bumps along the rows

Nail pops lift the shingle above them.

Stains on the ceiling

Water getting past a damaged shingle or seam.

Daylight in the attic

Openings at nails or gaps in the deck.

Cost factors

What a shingle repair costs depends on

Shingle repairs are priced on what we find. Five things set the number:

  • Area of damage

A few tabs and a whole slope are different jobs.

  • Shingle match

Current colors are easy; discontinued ones need the closest blend.

  • Deck condition

Soft decking under the damage adds sheathing work.

  • Pitch and height

Steep and two-story roofs need more setup.

  • Nearby flashing

Damage near walls or vents often includes flashing work.

The shingle repairs we make most

Missing and curling shingles

Tabs torn off in wind leave nails and felt exposed; curled edges let wind under and rain in. We lift the course above, remove the damaged shingles and install matched replacements with correct nailing, then hand-seal the tabs so they bond even if the weather turns cool. When only a few shingles are gone, we'll use leftover bundles from the original install if you have them, since those match best; otherwise we find the closest current color.

Granule loss and bald spots

Granules shield the asphalt from UV. When they wash off you see black bald patches, and the shingle underneath begins to crack. Small patches from a scuffed area or a gutter overflow can be replaced; widespread loss on the sunny slopes usually means the roof is near the end. We'll also check where the wash-off is coming from, such as a downspout from an upper roof dumping onto the shingles, and add a diverter so the problem doesn't repeat.

Nail pops and lifted seams

A nail that backs out lifts the shingle above it and eventually punches through. We pull popped nails, fasten into solid deck beside the old hole, seal the old holes and reseat the shingle. Lifted seams at ridges and rakes are resealed with compatible roofing sealant. Widespread nail pops can point to decking that moves with seasonal moisture, so we check the attic side as well, since fixing nails alone won't hold if the boards keep shifting.

Santa Ana winds reach 60 to 80 mph through the passes and dry roofing out as they go, and one event with gusts over 90 mph stripped asphalt shingles from roofs across Pasadena and Altadena. Shingles that were nailed high or never sealed go first. On any wind call we check the tabs around the damage, not just the missing ones, because their seal is often broken too.

Doing it yourself

Why sealant on the roof isn't a shingle repair

A tube of sealant squeezed under a curled tab or over a cracked shingle may hold a season, then peel and trap water. It also glues the shingles together, which makes the real repair harder.

From the ground, watch for pieces in the yard and granules at the downspouts, and call before the next rain instead of climbing up.

How the job runs

How a shingle repair runs

  1. Find the damage

We walk the roof and check the attic below.

  2. Check the deck

Soft spots and old nail holes are checked first.

  3. Replace and fasten

Matched shingles installed with correct nailing.

  4. Seal the tabs

Surrounding tabs hand-sealed so wind can't lift them.

  5. Report

Photos and an honest read on the roof's remaining life.
